The development and nurturing of
youthful talent are generally the way to advancing and ensuring the future of
any sport and the Jamaica Golf Association, in its efforts to promote the game
of golf in the island, has taken on the responsibility of establishing a
National Junior Golf Programme.
To implement this vision for junior
golf, the JGA appointed a National Junior Golf Committee whose primary
function is to monitor and support junior programmes sponsored and operated by
individual member golf clubs in Jamaica. Each club is, however, responsible
for maintaining the everyday running of its programme.
Currently there are three active junior programmes in the
National Programme. These are; two SuperClubs sponsored programmes in Runaway
Bay and Ironshore and a Constant Spring Golf Club programme which
is managed by the JGA. These three programs
together accommodate 90 juniors for weekly training sessions, tournaments, and
occasional golf clinics. none of the other clubs
currently have one in place.
The JGA’s programme at Constant Spring
has undergone radical restructuring with the ultimate aim of establishing it as
the proto-type for Junior Golf Programmes in Jamaica, thereby making it an
integral part of the National Junior Golf Programme. Currently there are
students from 12 Corporate area schools involved in this.
